Efficient Monte Carlo Raytracing-Based Global Illumination for Out-of-Core Scenes with Many-Core-Hardware

Abstract

The main purpose of global illumination algorithms is to synthesize photorealistic images by computing the distribution of light in a scene. Despite their computer graphics background, they are not limited to the visible spectrum of light and even have been used for sound propagation simulations. At their core all global illumination algorithms try to solve or approximate the so called rendering equation, which only has closed-form solutions for uninteresting case. Predominantly Monte Carlo integration is used for solving the rendering equation. This inevitably leads to the need to perform ray tracing.
