Introduction

Today’s product development process can be seen as a decision making process. Using decision-making methods can increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the product development process. Complexity of products and therefore, the complexity of product development, global acting companies and shorten product life-cycles increase the need of support decision-maker. In this environment consequences of decisions are hard to estimate or due to complexity even cannot be foreseen by one single product developer.

To foster decision-making in product development and support documentation and currency of decision relevant information, a graphical representation for decision and their related information in virtual product development is needed.

Research topic

This research proposes a method for decision-presentation in virtual product development based on a proposed decision data model to support decision-makers in the product development process.

By using the data of decision-definition and representation a decision-presentation can be implemented. The presentation of the proposed method can be achieved by and is implemented as a graphical user interface (GUI) in Abaqus.

This GUI allows definition of decision relevant information and presentation of decision as annotation in the product model of Abaqus. Additionally different presentations in form of views within the GUI are available. These views allow the presentation of the interactions between the decisions.

A profile gasket for off-shore wind turbine rotor bearings is used as an application example.

By validating the implemented systematic approach, the benefit and the applicability for decision support is shown.
