The group’s research lies is in the development and applications of statistical methods for signal processing. The main focus is in the development of novel methods for signal detection, parameter estimation and model selection, which rest on computer-based statistical analysis, in particular bootstrap methods. This new framework for signal processing uses computer analysis, in which the original data is re-used to simulate new experiments, in lieu of conventional mathematical analysis. These advances comprise alternative approaches to conventional ones based on unrealistic assumptions such as the applicability of the central limit theorem, and provide solutions to statistical signal processing problems which involve intractable mathematics. The contributions are characterized by the approaches to designing time- and frequency-domain based independent data re-sampling schemes for dependent data. The methods developed set a new paradigm in statistical signal processing and provide solutions to problems occurring in realistic measurement environments when the statistical distribution of noise is unknown and/or the number of measurement samples is small. The research findings have been applied in various areas, such as in a prototype impulse ground penetrating radar system for the detection of anti-personal landmines.
