The main focus of the group is the numerical simulation of electromagnetic fields. The application range extends from low frequency industrial applications up to ultra-high frequency applications in X-Ray generation technology. An important field of research is the simulation of coupled multi-physics systems in the presence of electromagnetic fields. This includes the development of specific numerical techniques as well as their application in the context of real-world industrial solutions. Actual research topics related to the topics of the Graduate School are: modeling of the low-frequency electromechanical coupling in sensors and actuators, bioelectromagnetics and electromagnetic compatibility studies using high resolution human anatomy models, design and optimization of particle accelerator components and numerical investigations of arc-discharge phenomena in high current circuit breakers. In the latter, the coupling of electromagnetic fields, heat and fluid flow is realized by embedding different software into a single, multi-physics simulation environment. A number of advanced numerical algorithms specifically designed for the multi-physics character of coupled problems have been developed and implemented. These include space-and time adaptive algorithms for simulations involving different physical scales. As an example, a number of novel time-domain discretization methods have been introduced based on local, time-adaptive grid-refinement. Another field of algorithmic research is the development of optimal parallel-task redistribution methods for high performance computing on distributed memory architectures. Dynamic parallelization strategies have already been applied in massive beam dynamics simulations.
