The Multimedia Communications Lab embraces the vision of seamless multimedia communication as a means of supporting people to collaborate, and communicate independent of geographical constraints. A communications system must provide infrastructure to be dependable, secure, and adaptable to user requirements. High performance across network boundaries is needed to provide the quality of service necessary and to avoid the risk of bottlenecks potentially created by unreliable network components. The lab works on different research areas towards this vision: communication services, IT architectures, knowledge media, performance evaluation (modeling, analysis, simulation), mobile networking, network mechanisms & quality of services, peer-to-peer networking, ubiquitous computing, and networked gaming. Application areas are: communication services and IP telephony (demanding technical requirements), e-learning (multimedia interfaces and communication) and e-business, in particular e-finance (domain for proof of concept). The Graduate School for Computational Engineering will apply technologies either in the research focus of Multimedia Communications Lab or belonging to the application areas. This holds especially for knowledge media, communication service and performance evaluation. Mobile networking, ubiquitous computing and network mechanisms & quality of services may play a vital role for new user interfaces and mobile requirements.
