The research area of the group includes modeling and simulation of coupled multi-physics problems along with hierarchical multi-scale modelling approaches. For a successful numerical treatment of the problems the use of modern, high-performance computing techniques is a prerequisite. The group is currently working on different projects for developing new techniques for modelling and simulating multiphase reacting flows, in particular dispersion, phase change and combustion in turbulent flows of dense and dilute, solid-gas or liquid mixtures with application to particle transport, deposition and processing. Emphasis is put on the development of a computationally inexpensive turbulent multiphase simulation tool with application to turbulent liquid spray systems with complex geometries, such as in modern gas turbine combustors and IC engines. Thereby complete models consisting of different coupled submodels have being designed for the study, control and optimization of complex, thermo-fluidmechanical and chemical processes. Other projects are primarily concerned with analysis, modeling and numerical description of technical flows using various techniques, like Reynolds-Averaged Numerical Simulation, Large Eddy Simulation, and Probability Density Function. The group is also involved in activities related to thermo-continuum mechanical problems, including a thermodynamically consistent modeling and simulation of modern rheological materials.
