Prof. Michael Schäfer

The research of the group concerns the development, analysis, and application of numerical algorithms for the simulation and optimization of continuum mechanical engineering problems. Applications are considered from fluid mechanics, structural mechanics, and heat transfer. A focus is on phenomena involving multi-physics. In particular, extensive experience is available in the following fields: computation of turbulent flows with statistical models and large eddy simulation, simulation of mechanical and thermal fluid-structure interaction, simulation of electromagnetic-fluid-thermal interaction, shape optimization with Newton-based and evolutionary methods, multigrid methods for convergence acceleration, as well as parallel high-performance computing. Reliability and computational efficiency of the simulation constitute key issues of the scientific work. Examples of practical applications considered recently include the investigation and design of antenna structures, stirrer devices, gas turbines, forming processes, and heat exchangers.
