Prof. Dieter Fellner

The research in this group, relevant for the proposed graduate school, focuses on three main challenges:

  1. Acquisition and representation of semantics throughout the modelling process chain, which, e.g., implies a shift in representing shape from polygonal meshes to a combination of elementary geometries and functions and operators.
  2. Exploitation of the confluence of graphics and vision, e.g. in the field of virtual and augmented reality.
  3. Consistent handling of engineering information, with '3D documents' being just one of the many facets of this challenge.

All research work is carried out in close cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institut für Graphische Datenverarbeitung (IGD) in Darmstadt. IGD focuses on the development of product prototypes (hard- and software) and the realization of concepts, models, and solutions for computer graphics and its adaption to specific application requirements. The work is complemented by object-oriented basic research projects and the realization of single devices and computer graphics systems with pilot character (e.g. virtual and augmented reality, mobile computing, and security technologies). Among the many R&D consortia IGD is involved in, the most relevant for this graduate school is the one on Functional Digital Mockup (FunctionalDMU), where IGD is the leading partner.
