Flow and Combustion in modern Gas Turbine Combustion Chambers

In this work the focus is on simulating an annular combustion chamber of a stationary gas turbine. Detailed knowledge of the flow-,mixing and combustion phenomena inside the combustion chamber provides the basis to develop low em mission, fuel efficient gas turbines. Therefor the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method is a valuable tool if it is possible to model turbulent combustion right. Numerically one has to select and develop methods that are able to cope with large differences in density, strongly coupled source terms in the balance equations and a wide spectrum of time scales as these features are characteristic for turbulent combustion.
